Whilst Head, Heart & Hand Holidays specialise in building much needed Wash Houses at remote school communities in Siem Reap, Cambodia, we’re all about basic human rights and we believe this includes people having access to safe and secure shelter.

While poverty has decreased significantly, many Cambodian families are hovering just above the poverty line of US$1.25 a day. Nearly three quarters of the population still live on less than US$3 a day, based on World Bank’s data.

Poverty is largely concentrated in the rural areas though urban poverty is on the rise.

Housing needs in Cambodia

Based on a 2013 official population survey, it is estimated that at least 10 million Cambodians are in need of decent housing. Throughout the country, about 2 million houses require critical improvement to meet minimum quality standards.

As witnessed by our project manager in Cambodia: “Shelter is considered a basic need in Maslow’s theory, yet a great number of Cambodian families are without shelter or live in basic huts that are overcrowded. A lot of Cambodian elderly are left abandoned and homeless because their adult children are forced to immigrate illegally to neighbouring countries to seek work just to survive.

While parents are away working in neighbouring countries, their children are left behind in unacceptable living conditions, fully dependent on their elderly grandparents. By providing safe and secure shelter you are also improving the health and well-being of families living in poverty. When children are healthy they are empowered to attend school and education is the only real hope for breaking the cycle of poverty.”
