What is Attachment theory?

Attachment theory, developed by psychologist John Bowlby and later expanded by Mary Ainsworth states that the bonds formed between infants & their primary caregivers significantly influence emotional & relational patterns through out a person’s life. The core idea is that early experiences with caregivers shape an individual’s expectations and behaviours in relationship.

Key Concepts of Attachment Theory:

2. Attachment styles: Based on early interactions with caregivers, individuals typically develop one of four primary attachment styles:

Secure Attachment: Characterised by comfort with intimacy & a strong sense of trust in relationships. Individuals with this style feel safe to express their emotions & seek support.

Anxious Attachment: Marked by a preoccupation with relationships & a fear of abandonment. Individuals often seek constant reassurance & may be overly sensitive to their partner’s signals.

Avoidant Attachment: Characterised by a reluctance to depend on others & a preference for emotional distance. Individuals may struggle with intimacy & express discomfort with closeness.

Disorganised Attachment: Often resulting from inconsistent or traumatic caregiving, this style combines elements of both anxious & avoidant attachment. Individuals may feel confusion or fear regarding intimacy & relationships.

2. Internal Working Models: These are mental frameworks formed in early childhood based on interactions with caregivers. They influence how individuals perceive themselves, their relationships & the world around them. A secure attachment leads to a positive self-esteem & trust in others, while insecure attachments can lead to negative self-perceptions & difficulties in relationships.

3. Impact on Adult Relationships: Attachment styles established in childhood often carry into adult romantic relationships affecting how individuals communicate, handle conflict & express emotional needs. Understanding one’s attachment style can provide insights into relationship dynamics & help individuals work towards healthier dynamics.

Overall, attachment theory emphasises the importance of early relationships in shaping emotional development & interpersonal dynamics throughout life. It provides a framework for understanding how past experiences influence current behaviour & relationships.
