What is HSP?

a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) is someone who has a heightened sensitivity to sensory input & emotional experiences. This trait is estimated to affect about 15 - 20% of the population & is characterised by deep processing of information , a strong emotional response to stimuli & a keen awareness of subtleties in the environment. HSP’s may feel overwhelmed by loud noises, bright lights or strong smells & often require more down time to recharge after social interactions. We tend to be empathetic, responsive to the emotions of others & have a rich inner life.

HSP’s have a sensitive nervous system so we absorb & process more information than average and we ponder it more deeply. HSP can be misunderstood as a weakness but the fact is that HSP’s are highly capable, diligent & aware people who are just more attuned with our environment & other’s feelings than most people. HSP’s are empathic by nature and we’re biologically wired differently. We have a different approach to our physical environment and that’s not a weakness but a strength. We’re detail orientated and notice things others may miss. We’re gifted in that we can read people well & know when they’re lying or deceiving. We’re highly intuitive & crave for deep connections. We look for meaningfulness in everything we do.

Role of Early Attachment

The interplay between inherent temperament & early attachment experiences can shape how sensitivity manifests in individuals, influencing their emotional regulation, social interactions & overall well-being.
